"Brown" propolis is a resinous substance which originates mainly from the buds and bark of certain trees, including poplar, birch and alder. It is mostly producted in Asia but also in Europe in small quantities.
The Egyptian, Roman, Greek civilisations knew of the healing and antiseptic properties of propolis. It was used in particular for mummificatioons and ancient papyruses indicate it was also used as an antimicrobial medecine.
The main benefit of propolis is that it contains flavonoids, compounds of the polyphenol family, which are responsible for colour in plants and have powerful antioxidant, antifungal and antibacterial propoerties.
